Façade on Fillmore & Bush A commercial block’s piecemeal history is revitalized by a unified storefront in San Francisco

  • Italianate storefront detail restored.
  • Seismic retrofit.
  • Seven storefront commercial block unified.

This Italianate commercial building housing seven storefronts survived the 1906 earthquake but was almost unrecognizable as a single structure under layers of haphazard and chaotic alterations. The building’s owners, anxious to contribute to the renaissance of Fillmore Street, decided to invest in a seismic upgrade and storefront renewal.

The new storefront uses the Classical vocabulary of the Italianate period to both unify the building and differentiate individual stores using porticos of alternating design and color. The seismic upgrade incorporated as part of the alterations stabilizes the structure and allows for generous display windows.
