Craftsman Bungalow RemodelA re-interpreted floor plan opened up this cottage bungalow in Albany, California

  • Back of the house opened to rear yard.
  • Square footage increased within original footprint.
  • Kitchen and baths updated.

This Craftsman bungalow, originally built as a two bedroom, one bath cottage, had undergone a previous, ill-advised remodel in which the attic was converted to two bedrooms. Correcting the numerous issues that resulted from and addressing the warren of cramped rooms and poor circulation that characterize the “back of the house” in many older homes required rethinking much of the floor plan. The whole house remodel that resulted was nonetheless accomplished within the footprint of the original structure while preserving or re-interpreting the its character-defining features.
